Former Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has addressed the controversy surrounding her recent questioning by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of diverting ₦138 million during her tenure.
Why I Honored the EFCC Invitation
In a statement, Kennedy-Ohanenye clarified that she voluntarily honored the EFCC’s invitation on March 6, 2025, to provide a detailed explanation regarding her actions and expenditures while in office.
“As a former public servant, I understand that inquiries about past official activities are essential for accountability. That’s why I willingly presented myself at the EFCC headquarters,” she said.
She revealed that she arrived at the EFCC office at 2:15 p.m., and substantive discussions began at 2:50 p.m., lasting until 6:50 p.m. During the session, she reportedly provided comprehensive clarifications to the commission.
Kennedy-Ohanenye commended the EFCC for its professionalism and hospitality and emphasized her unwavering commitment to transparency and accountability in public service.
Denies Wrongdoing, Pledges Cooperation
The former minister insisted that she and her team diligently carried out their duties, ensuring efficient use of resources and even contributing personal funds to support government initiatives.
“I assure you that the facts will ultimately prove the integrity of my actions,” she stated, adding that she remains available for any further inquiries.
Gratitude to Tinubu, Commitment to Women’s Development
Kennedy-Ohanenye also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu for their support during her tenure. She reaffirmed her commitment to the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Nigerian women and children.
Her invitation by the EFCC follows her removal from office in a cabinet reshuffle by President Tinubu in October 2024.
