As part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility, Nigerian Breweries Plc, one of Nigeria’s leading brewing companies, has handed over a 2-ton-per-day cassava processing plant to the Awo-Omamma community in Owerri, Imo State.
Delivering his keynote address at the commissioning ceremony, the Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Thibaut Boidin, described the initiative as another milestone in the company’s pursuit of sustainable development and economic empowerment.
Boidin explained that the cassava processing plant would create both direct and indirect employment opportunities for local residents and youths, generate an estimated ₦500 million in annual revenue, and position Awo-Omamma as a regional hub for cassava processing.
He noted that Nigerian Breweries’ mission goes beyond brewing beverages, emphasizing that the company is equally focused on brewing prosperity, hope, and empowerment for the people and communities it serves.
“Over the years, through our various Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, we have consistently made meaningful and lasting impacts in vital areas such as education, healthcare, access to clean water, security, and economic empowerment. Today’s event further reflects our unwavering dedication to spreading joy and enabling progress in our host communities,” Boidin added.
He revealed that the project was developed following a thorough needs assessment carried out by the company in collaboration with local stakeholders.
Boidin further explained that the 2-ton-per-day cassava processing facility was conceived as a sustainable, income-generating venture aimed at addressing socio-economic challenges and preserving livelihoods previously supported by the now-mothballed Awo-Omamma brewery.
In his remarks, His Royal Majesty, Eze Dr. Val Amanfo, Eze Amanfo VI, the traditional ruler of Awo-Omamma, expressed deep gratitude to Nigerian Breweries for its thoughtful gesture toward the community.
“This donation will go a long way in supporting food production, providing jobs for our women and youths, and encouraging local farmers. It brings hope to many families and strengthens the bond between our people and your organisation. As the traditional ruler of this land, I assure you that the people of Awo-Omamma deeply appreciate this gesture. We recognise your effort, your respect for our community, and your commitment to shared progress. We will continue to support your operations so that together, we sustain a peaceful and mutually beneficial relationship,” he said.
Also speaking, the Imo State Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Chief (Barr.) Rex C. Anunobi, commended Nigerian Breweries for its enduring presence in the state and its positive impact on local economic growth despite prevailing challenges.
Anunobi said the establishment of the cassava processing facility underscores the company’s sensitivity to the needs of its host communities and aligns with the Imo State Government’s economic development agenda.
“The commissioning of this cassava processing plant will undoubtedly boost local income and employment for the people of Awo-Omamma. The Imo State Government deeply appreciates Nigerian Breweries Plc for this remarkable contribution, which serves as a shining example for other corporate organisations to follow. We assure you of our continued partnership and support to ensure the facility operates efficiently and contributes meaningfully to the prosperity of our people,” he stated.
