At Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, fraternity houses have traditionally been closely tied to campus social life, offering students opportunities for friendship, community and shared experiences. But renewed allegations involving one fraternity have prompted the university to reconsider how Greek life operates and how individual responsibility is enforced within such organisations.

Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff said Saturday that the university would conduct a “serious look” at its fraternity and sorority system following renewed attention surrounding allegations by a student who says she was drugged and sexually assaulted by members of Chi Phi in 2024.

The allegations are at the centre of a civil lawsuit filed against Cornell, Chi Phi and several individuals. The men accused in the lawsuit have denied the allegations.

In a video message addressed to the university community, Kotlikoff acknowledged the concerns raised by the case and said Cornell needed to examine how it oversees fraternities and sororities.

He said the university would seek input from students, alumni and other members of the Cornell community as it considers how to retain the positive aspects of Greek life while improving accountability, transparency and safety.

The student filed the lawsuit last month, alleging that several fraternity members drugged and sexually assaulted her in 2024. The allegations have not been established through a criminal trial.

Cornell has maintained that it responded to the incident through a comprehensive investigation and disciplinary process. The university said sanctions were imposed, including expulsions, and that Chi Phi was subsequently prohibited from operating on campus.

Despite those measures, the lawsuit has raised fresh questions about the university’s handling of the matter and how effectively its actions were communicated.

Questions Extend Beyond Chi Phi

The controversy has increasingly focused attention on the broader culture surrounding fraternities and sororities rather than solely on the allegations involving one organisation.

Kotlikoff said Greek organisations can provide students with friendship, mentorship and a sense of belonging. However, he stressed that belonging to a fraternity or sorority does not remove an individual’s obligation to ensure the safety and wellbeing of others.

The university president also pledged greater openness about Cornell’s response to the 2024 allegations and said students and other members of the community would have additional opportunities to raise questions with university leaders.

The investigation has also attracted attention outside Cornell. New York officials appointed Attorney General Letitia James as a special prosecutor to examine the allegations after Governor Kathy Hochul said she had lost confidence in the local prosecutor’s handling of the matter.

The development has broadened scrutiny to include not only Cornell’s internal procedures but also the wider system for responding to allegations of sexual assault.

For Cornell, the issue now extends beyond the events alleged to have occurred in 2024. The university faces questions about how it will respond to the concerns raised by the case and whether its review of Greek life will lead to meaningful changes in accountability, transparency and student safety.
